How Safe Is Your Home?

The typical home uses dozens of cleaning and personal care products which contain chemical ingredients that are harmful to your health and your family.
Air Freshener: Highly flammable. Health effects include irritation to the eyes, throat and lungs. Fumes act as a nerve-deadening agent to cover up one smell with another but can be very damaging to the respiratory tract.
Antifreeze: Poisonous to animals. Absorption through the skin may cause damage to internal organs and inhalation can cause dizziness.
Automatic Dishwashing Detergents: (Powdered/Liquid) Can cause strong irritation to skin. If swallowed, can cause mild to severe internal burns. Harmful to the environment.
Bleach: Contact with eyes can cause severe irritation, burns. Fumes can be a strong irritant to eyes, throat and lungs. Ingestion can cause injury to the esophagus, stomach resulting in nausea and vomiting.
Carpet Cleaner: May contain carcinogenic and toxic fumes causing dizziness, nausea, loss of appetite and sleepiness.
Disinfectant: Strong toxic, carcinogenic and corrosive agents. Vapors can be irritating to the skin, eyes and respiratory system; they are especially hazardous when dispersed from aerosol cans as fumes can be easily ingested, irritating the nose and mouth.
Floor Cleaner: Flammable. Fumes irritate skin, eyes, throat mucous membranes and respiratory tract. Inhalation causes headache, drowsiness.
Furniture Cleaner: Contains flammable propellants. Irritant to the skin, eyes and respiratory tract.Furniture Polish Highly flammable. Health affects include irritation to the skin, eyes, nose and lungs when fumes are inhaled. Ingestion may include moderate to severe nausea, vomiting, dizziness and even death.
Glass/Window Cleaner: Fumes can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, and lungs.
Hair Spray: Highly flammable. Health affects from long-term use may include irritation to eyes and respiratory system as well as serious health problems.
Insect Repellant: Irritant to sensitive skin and toxic to respiratory tract. Ingestion or inhalation can cause central nervous system depression and may affect the liver and kidney. Excessive use can produce symptoms such as loss of coordination, anxiety, behavioral changes and mental confusion.
Laundry Detergent: Can be an irritant to the skin. If swallowed, can cause mild to severe internal burns. Harmful to the environment.
Mildew Remover: Strong corrosive toxin and suspected carcinogen. Health effects from inhalation, absorption through the skin, or ingestion can cause respiratory irritation including lung inflammation, and dry skin.Mothballs A toxic pesticide and suspected carcinogen. Strong irritant to skin, eyes and respiratory tract causing headache, confusion or depression. Prolonged vapor exposure can lead to liver damage and cataract formation.
Nail Polish Remover: Flammable. Irritating to eyes, nose and throat.
Oven Cleaner: Extremely corrosive. Fumes and vapors are extremely toxic, irritating to the skin, eyes, and lungs. Contact with the skin can cause moderate to serious burns. Inhalation causes irritation to the nose, mouth and lungs causing headache, coughing, nausea, vomiting. Ingestion is fatal.
Pool Chemicals: Some may be corrosive and hazardous to human health. In concentrated amounts these chemicals can produce toxic gases that can burn the eyes and skin.
Roach Killer: An acutely toxic pesticide suspected to be carcinogenic. Inhalation can cause headache, dizziness, nausea and/or twitching. Affects the nervous system.
Spot Remover: Fumes are acutely toxic and carcinogenic. Symptoms of inhalation may include dizziness, sleepiness, nausea, loss of appetite and disorientation.
Toilet Bowl Cleaner: Extremely toxic and corrosive. Inhalation can be a strong irritant to the eyes and respiratory tract. Contact with the skin can create burning sensations
